Host Agency:LACCD & PROPOSITION A/AA BOND PROGRAM
The Los Angeles
Community College District (LACCD) is the largest community
college districts in the country, educating more than 110,000
students at its nine colleges each year. Over the past seventy-seven
years LACCD served as educator to more than three million
students. Affordable, accessible and practical, the LACCD
offers opportunity to all. The District’s doors are
wide open for a diverse student population eager for skills,
knowledge and upward mobility. LACCD educates almost three
times as many Latino students and nearly four times as many
African-American students as all of the University of California
campuses combined. Eighty percent of LACCD students are from
underserved populations.
Community colleges serve adults of all ages,
meeting the needs of a society where "lifelong learning"
is the rule and multiple careers and continual retraining
are the norm. More than half of all LACCD students are older
than 25 years of age, and more than a quarter are 35 or older.
More than any other California system of higher education,
community colleges offer a first - and a second - chance for
anyone who wants to succeed.
LACCD is currently undertaking a $2.2 billion construction program, thanks to
the passage of Propositions A and AA by Los Angeles voters in
2001 and 2003 respectively. Since the inception of the Bond
Program through March 2006, LACCD has completed 95 projects
totaling $363 million. There are an additional 145 projects
included in the Bond program which still need to be completed
totaling $1.99 billion. As part of the Bond program, the District
is undertaking new construction and refurbishing projects throughout
its nine campuses including new libraries, educational buildings,
athletic fields, infrastructure improvements, maintenance facilities,
parking structures, etc.
The Proposition A/AA Bond Program is making a positive impact
on local and small businesses. As part of its commitment to
promoting community economic development, LACCD is seeking
the maximum possible participation by Local, Small, Emerging
and Disabled-Veteran owned businesses with expertise in a
variety of areas on construction and renovation projects funded
by the Proposition A/AA Bond Program.
In addition, the Bond program is the largest public sector
sustainable building program in the United States. Through
these construction projects, LACCD has set the goal to self
produce 25 percent of its energy needs with 10 percent utilizing
photovoltaic cells. The construction and modernization projects
are being undertaken at each of the nine community colleges.
